SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – The San Diego Half Marathon and Padres 5k is coming up soon and is approaching its 9th annual race, taking place on March 15 with an epic finish inside Petco Park.

This year’s race is dedicated to military appreciation. San Diego has more than 110,000 active duty personnel with more than 15% of all Navy and 30% of Marine living in San Diego.

All races end with an epic finish inside Petco Park, with three race options to choose from: half marathon, 2-person half marathon relay or the Padres 5K.

The course showcases the City of San Diego, with 5 miles of waterfront starting on Harbor Drive and running through Harbor Island, passing the Midway Museum along the way. Participants run through four historic communities including Liberty Station and Hillcrest. Runners venture through or past 3 beautiful parks including Balboa Park and NTC Park, complete with two miles through downtown San Diego and an epic finish inside the ballpark.

The Padres 5K is a scenic 3.1-mile race designed for all ages and abilities to enjoy the epic finish inside Petco Park.

Coinciding with the military appreciation theme, each runner will receive a collectible finisher’s medal, a technical running shirt, a commemorative Padres-branded gift and a ticket to a select San Diego Padres baseball game in the 2020 season.

Susan Briggs founded the San Diego Half Marathon in 2011 with the goal of building San Diego’s premier race for runners, however the race would be a 501(c)(3) non-profit managed by volunteers with a passion of giving back to the community. 100% of the net proceeds are committed to local community service projects and charities.

Bill Johnston, Padres vice president of sports programs, has participated in each of the races in an effort to raise awareness and funds for the fight against Huntington’s Disease, with the Huntington’s Disease Society of America being one of the selected beneficiaries of the marathon.

Those interested in participating in the San Diego Half Marathon and Padres 5K are encouraged to register before the next price increase on February 9th.
